SHANNON SURPRISED HIM when she laughed. She stepped closer to him, within touching distance.

“Do you think your aversion to arguing is news to me?”

“I don’t know.” He shrugged, not remembering how much he’d told her about that. “I always hated the noise and the arguing at my house, growing up. My brothers could never get it through their heads that I was wired differently than they were. My family took out their anger physically. Verbally. I picked up a guitar.”

She stood so close to him he couldn’t help feeling as if they were the only two people in the world right now. What was to stop them from taking advantage of this time together? They’d always understood each other sexually.

And all the arguing or lack of arguing in the world hadn’t changed that. Without weighing the costs of his action, he pulled her into the circle of his arms. Hands bracketing her hips, he leaned in to kiss her, savoring the way her eyes widened and her mouth went slack with surprise.

Desire.

He kissed her there, right on those full lips, teasing his tongue across their glossy sweetness. She held back for a moment, but he was not having any of it. If she wanted out of this kiss, she could damn well start her infernal arguing right now, because this was one thing he’d go to the mat for. One thing they hadn’t polluted with pointless fights that left them exhausted.

Aligning his hips with hers, he pressed closer. She gripped his shoulders with sudden fierceness, obviously getting the message. Her breasts molded to his chest.

Her hips cradled his, the heat of her apparent right through two layers of denim. If she’d been wearing a skirt, he would have been inside her already.

He bent to kiss the side of her throat, nipping a spot guaranteed to make her shiver with need. He’d never met a woman with such a sensitive neck.

A shudder rippled through her, ending in a slight roll of her hips that set off a fresh ache to be buried deep in her.

“This isn’t fighting fair,” she murmured, even as her neck arched to give him better access.

Her thighs gave way, removing another barrier from where he wanted to be as he shifted his leg between hers. She bit off a sweet sigh of pleasure, but not before he’d heard the first sexy notes.

“Sweetheart, this isn’t fighting at all. That’s my whole point.”

She tightened her grip on his shirt, her fingernails grazing his shoulders through the cotton. And didn’t that bring back memories? He’d found telltale crescent moon marks in those same exact places before.

He blew on the damp spot on her neck where he’d kissed her. Her eyelids fluttered but didn’t close.

“But did you bring condoms out into the desert with you?”

The question stopped him short. The breath he’d been exhaling along her flesh dried up, since he hadn’t thought that far ahead.

“I don’t want to tease you. Or me either, for that matter.” She wriggled away from him a few inches.
